"Shiizakana" opens with Hannibal tied to a tree. The stag as directed by Will is slowly walking forward strangling Hannibal. All the while Hannibal is spouting off something about loving people means seeing their true potential. OK, whatever. And we all knew that was just a dream.
This week's killer is at first believed to be a person directing a wolf/bear to kill and mutilate victims. After Will views the second crime scene, he determines it's actually a person . "It's not an animal. It's a man trying to be an animal". Uh dude we could have told you that. The victims were killed in the snow. If there are no animal foot prints, it's not an animal. Will goes to see Pete who is in jail. Why is he in prison? We determined last week that his social worker killed those girls. Well maybe it's because Pete sewed him up in a horse as a well deserved punishment.
They determine that the bite marks were caused by a cave bear. The only problem is the cave bear has been extinct for millions of years. Yeah like you're really going to figure that out. Turns out the killer was a previous patient of Hannibal's named Randall Tier. Hannibal goes to visit him at work at the natural history museum. There are lots of reconstructed animals around including that of the cave bear. And I the only one that thought dire wolves were just made up creatures from "Game of Thrones"? It turns out they were real: Dire Wolf I stand corrected.
Meanwhile Margo meets Will. And then stalks him at his house. They compare notes about Hannibal. What is she up to? I think she's looking for someone to kill her brother Mason. Will later says to Hannibal "I'm curious Dr Lecter. What would happen if your patients started to compare notes?" Meaning how many of his patients has he taught/encouraged to successfully get away with murder?
Hannibal sends Randall to Will's house to kill him. Poor Buster the dog. I thought Randall was going to mutilate him. We see Randall crash through Will's window. Then in the final scene Will brings a dead Randall to Hannibal. "I'd say this makes us even. I sent someone to kill you. You sent someone to kill me. Even Steven." We'll see about that.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not my favorite episode. The killer was pretty hokey. And Hannibal seemed to be spouting off more platitudes than usual. Hopefully next week will be better. I still love you anyway Hannibal!
