Once Upon A Time Season 4 Episodes 2 Thru 5 Recaps: A Snowballs Chance in Hell

Baby Steps, Baby Steps

I'm a little behind in recapping "Once Upon A Time" but let's be honest. I only watch it for Lana Parrilla and Swan Queen. I know, I know. It has a snowball's chance in hell of becoming canon but I dont care. I refuse to give up (and I'm not the only one). And with "Breaking Glass" we get a tiny bit closer to our goal... baby steps, baby steps.  Anyway, back to the show. The story arc this season involves the "Frozen' characters Elsa and Anna. And there's another Snow Queen (Elizabeth Mitchell). Here's the highlights:

Someone With A Pet Reindeer Cant Be Bad

In "White Out" the residents of Storeybrooke are getting to know Elsa. She at first appears to be a baddie (well she did put an ice wall around the town) but she's just misunderstood.

And I'm Charging You Extra For Your Rat Trap Of A Wig!

Flashback to the Enchanted Forest where David (with his freaky long wig) encounters Anna. They chat about this and that. Then Bo Peep arrives with her posse. She's not the meek Bo Peep you know. She is a tyrant and is there to shake down David and his mum for the rent money. Hilarious! And if you didnt recognize her, that's Robin Weigert from such shows as "Deadwood", "Sons of Anarchy", "Concussion"etc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Weigert  Anna tells David he better learn how to use a sword post haste so he can kill Bo Peep. So David goes to Bo Peep's place, roughs her up a little and gets Anna's necklace back. OK then.

I Think I'll Take A Little Nap In The Snow

Back in Storeybrooke Emma, David and Hook go to investigate the strange ice happenings. Emma frightens Elsa and ends up being trapped with her. Emma is freezing to death and Elsa cant control her magic to help. Kudos to Jennifer Morrison for looking like she was actually dying. In order to save Emma, David and Hook have to go on some convoluted mission that involves the necklace, Bo Peep's staff and Elsa believes in herself. I am seriously confused by this rescue plan.

Anyway they find Bo Peep (who is now a butcher in Storeybrooke) and get her staff. Lamb chops anyone? Instead of all that work, cant you just get a blow torch or some heaters or something and melt the ice? Why not call Regina who could rescue Emma in like two seconds flat. But no... we cant have Regina rescuing Emma every other day can we?

And elsewhere in town, Snow is now mayor (because Regina is depressed over Emma). There's a blackout and everyone yells at her. She finally figures out how to turn the power back while breastfeeding little Neal. That woman has some mad skillz. Henry finally breaks through Regina's depression and they hug. That was a nice scene.

Bad Ice Cream Allergy

In "Rocky Road" we find the Snow Queen running Storeybrooke's ice cream shop. She puts a sleeping curse in Marion's rocky road ice cream (hence the episode title). Marion has never had ice cream before and after this incident will probably never want to have it again. Regina who at first wanted to kill Marian is now working to try to remove the spell. Robin tries to cure Marion with true love's kiss. That doesnt work. I suggest Regina or Emma try instead (just in case). Regina eventually ends up pulling out her heart for safe keeping (just until they can figure out a cure).

Operation Mongoose Begins

Regina tells Henry that she wants to find out who wrote the fairy tale book so she can get her happy ending. Henry agrees to help and starts Operation Mongoose. He hits up his grandpop (Rumple) for an after school job so he can snoop around the pawn shop.

Snow is busy doing her mayor stuff and get yelled at by the citizens. Elsa has been taken in by the Charmings. Hook tells Gold he will help find out who cursed Marion. Either that or Hook will tell wifie Belle that he slipped her a fake dagger. That sounds strangely sexual but it's not. Hook still has the hots for Emma (but never changes his clothes). It would also be nice if Elsa could get at least one extra gown.

And in the flashback of the week, soldiers attack Arendelle and to try imprison Elsa in an urn. But the Snow Queen shows up, announces she is Elsa's aunt and freezes everyone.Of course present day Elsa doesnt remember any of this.

Yep Making Young Girls Cry Is My Thing

And you all know the story of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" so no need to go into graphic detail here (plus it's kinda boring). Anna is still busy trying to find Elsa. She encounters Rumple in "The Apprentice". He tricks her into helping him turn the apprentice into a mouse. He forces her to confront her dark self. She grabs the dagger and cries on it. He sends her back to Arendelle minus the dagger. He's upset. She has an intimate moment with Kristoff. There's a reindeer. The walking broom makes an appearance.

Hook & His Rejoined Hand Go On A Date With Emma

Hook gets his hand back from Rumple but its possessed. He goes on a "real" date with Emma. They kiss and then she calls it a night. The Charmings are waiting for her the second she opens the door. Their continual embarrassment of Emma is one of the best parts of this show.

Why Is Everyone Beating On Me?

The Knave is back after his brief stint over at "OUAT: Wonderland". He gets pummeled by Hook and Snow chats him up. He breaks into the library and Belle finds his passed out the next morning clutching a copy of "Alice In Wonderland". Emma hauls him off to jail. Snow later pardons him (cause she's the mayor ya know).

Rumple agrees to get rid of Hook's bad hand but magic always comes with a price dearie. He has to go over to the apprentice's house and get the hat and the box. Whatever... snooze... Rumple keeps up his end of the bargain but then tells Hook his hand wasnt really bad after all. Psych.... too funny.

How Bout If the Tarrs From "Defiance" Visit Storeybrooke? That Would Be Epic!

"Breaking Glass" was my favorite of these four episodes because... well... SWAN QUEEN!  We see a flashback to Emma as a teenager. She encounters Lilly (played by Nicole Munoz who is Christie Tarr on "Defiance") and they swear to be BFFs forever. Dont they remind you of another blond and brunette combo we know?

But Lilly lied to Emma (she really had an adopted family) and Emma would not forgive her. Wow there were some heavy duty emotions between those two. OUAT writers: if you're trying to convince us that Emma is straight, the flashbacks arent helping your case.

Back in Storeybrooke, Regina, Emma and Elsa are traipsing around the woods. Elsa thinks she sees Anna so makes a snow bridge (but of course its a trick). Regina and Emma head across but Sydney picks that time to tell Regina what he thinks of her. Remember Regina put Sydney back in her mirror to help her kill Marion (but she later changed her mind). It turns out Sydney double crossed her and started working with the Snow Queen. She calls him a "traitor". He tells her she should look in the mirror sometime. Well Regina, ya cant just keep someone locked up in solitaire for years (either in the hospital or in a mirror) and expect them to gladly help ya.

Saving Storeybrooke... Again

Snow Queen has Elsa chained with some fear ice shackles. Who knew there was such a thing? Elsa must learn to confront her fear to escape. Are we for Snowie is really Elsa's aunt... or could she be her mother?  Emma and Regina use their magic to defeat a snow warrior (yes everything is about the snow this year). But the Snow Queen says she has what she needs from them anyway.

Regina, The Swan Queen Fans Know We Belong Together So Get Over It. Besides Make Up Sex Is The Best!

Crisis averted again for this week. Back at the vault Emma tells Regina that she is the only one that truly understands how she feels. She wont give up on trying to be friends (or whatever). Regina finally says "Emma, wait. I dont want to kill you" to which Emma replies "see, that's a start". And Swan Queen is back together folks. Yeah! And if you didnt get the feels during that, you have a cold, cold heart indeed!

And in the final scene we find out the Snow Queen was Emma's foster mother at some point. Emma has no recollection of such events. We know this because Emma kept the video of she and Lilly from all those years ago. At the end is footage of her foster family with Snow Queen. Across town, the Snow Queen takes a piece of Regina's compact mirror and put in the missing space into her larger mirror (hence the episode title "Broken Glass"). Incidentally do all queens have big ass mirrors that they monologue into all the time? Cause her mirror looks exactly like Regina's. Snow Queen says "I will have what I want, a family that loves me". And end scene. Everyone on this show has SERIOUS family issues in case you hadn't noticed.

Where Can I Find A Good Snow Therapist?

One final note before I close. Props to Elizabeth Mitchell. She is one of my favorite actresses and has been in practically everything on TV. If you dont know her, check her out on "Revolution", "Lost", the short live "V" series, and the movie "Gia" to name a few. Here's her fan club http://elizabeth-mitchell.org/ and Wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Mitchell

Favorite Quotes:
  • Regina: "Emma, wait. I dont want to kill you". Emma: "See, that's a start".
  • "Youre trying to win me over to try to assuage your guilt. You ruined my life and there's no coming back from that. I know you think you didnt mean but to... but you hurt someone. So do as I do, learn to live with it. Welcome to my world."- Regina to Emma.
  • Knave: "So I'm supposed to believe that the sheriff's wife can grant me my freedom?" Snow: I'm also the mayor.
  • "So what do I call you now Captain Hand?"- Emma to Hook after he gets his hand back.
  • Snow: "Im married to the sheriff". Knave: "The blonde one?"
  • "There's one thing my sister taught me. You don't give up on people. If someone's important to you, don't give up on them even if they say hurtful things or send a giant snow monster to chase you away."- Elsa to Emma
  • "I should have known you were old fashioned given your age. What are you like 300?"- Emma to Hook.
  • "Besides the snow monster and the cave in it seems like the savior needs saving these days".- Regina about Emma.
  • Emma: "Be patient". Hook: "I have all the time in the world, unless another monster appears and kills me".
  • "I googled how to get over a breakup. It didn't talk about your boyfriend's wife traveling back from the past but close enough."- Henry to Regina.
  • "Unfortunately Im a little busy trying to save my tru love's wife or havent you heard?"- Regina.
  • Regina: "There are many enchantments you have yet to be exposed to. If you bothered to study your craft you'd know that." Emma: There's not a lot of online classes on that sort of thing."
  • "I'm starting to get why Regina was evil. It wasn't her, it was you. You have survived your entire lives without lightbulbs. Buy a flashlight!"- Snow to the angry townspeople after the power went out.
  • "I will have what I want, a family that loves me."- Snow Queen.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). There is never as much Swan Queen as I would like but at least they're talking to each other now. Also bonus points for Elizabeth Mitchel! And bonus, bonus points for Warlord Bo Peep. Why cant she have a spinoff where she abuses all the characters in the Enchanted Forest?
