Viola Davis Better Win An Emmy For This!
I've heard so many good things about "How To Get Away With Murder" that I wanted to check it out. I'm happy to report that I really like it. It very much reminds me of "Damages". Viola Davis plays Annalise Keating. She is a law professor/defense attorney at Middleton University and a force to be reckoned with. The other main characters are her husband Sam (a psychology professor), her two law associates (Frank and Bonnie) and five students that she picks from her class to work with her. They are known as the Keating Five.
Is The Murder/Murders In This Picture?
Each episode thus far has been dedicated to a different student. There is a "case of the week" as well as a main story arch that carries through I assume the season (if not the series). There are several flash forwards to a murder coverup that is seen differently through each person's eyes.
Sam had an affair with Lila (a student). Sam has cheated on Annalise before. Sam may have cheated with Bonnie. But did Sam kill Lila? Or maybe Bonnie killed Lila. Its anyone's guess.
Annalise is cheating on Sam with Nate Leahy (a detective). Wes catches Nate and Annalise in the act. Annalise tries to manipulate Wes by turning on the water works.There's also a creepy sexual vibe between Annalise and Wes.
If Only Trophies Could Talk
Oh and Lady Justice gets a workout on this show (in more ways than one). Annalise ends up representing Rebecca who had dead Lila's phone (which has pictures of Annalise's husband Sam's penis on it). Wow this is getting complicated.
The Keating Five:
- Wes Gibbins- recently accepted from a waiting list. His next door neighbor Rebecca is somehow involved in the larger murder arc of Lila Stangard (who it turns out was also having an affair with Annalise's husband Sam). We're not sure what else Rebecca is involved in but its something BIG. Wes and Rebecca end up in a relationship. Wes seems to be a very moralistic person (that is until he hooked up with this bunch).
- Connor Walsh- gets intel for Annalise by bedding Oliver (an IT tech). He does a lot of sexing and has few morals. He slowly becomes mentally unhinged as the show progresses.
- Laurel Castillo- a bit of a mystery. She ends up having an affair with Frank and then breaking it off (because Bonnie told her too).
- Michaela Pratt- a very ambitious student. She'll do what it takes to get ahead. She has a fiance named Aiden (who had a boarding school gay hookup with Connor). Talk about uncomfortable. And Michaela seriously needs to keep better track of her engagement ring.
- Asher Millstone- son of the very rich and influential Judge Millstone. Bonnie and Asher end up having a thing. But we still dont know what Bonnie is really up to. Did she and Sam have a thing? She may end up being the key to this whole thing.

Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). I'm really enjoying this show so far. Viola Davis is very compelling to watch as Annalise Keating. She's powerful, she vulnerable, she's smart and she can rock a red leather jacket. I think we have the Emmy winner for best lead performance by an actress.
