American Horror Story Freak Show: Episode 4 Recap: Stop Clowning Around

In "Edward Mordrake Part 2" we see the back stories of several characters (since Mordrake has to determine who is most deserving of being drug to the pits of hell... or where ever he's from). Exactly what criteria does Ed use to select his victim? Is it the most evil person? Is it the person with the saddest sob story? Maybe I missed it but I dont think the writers ever told us exactly why Ed and his twin face do what they do. Back to the happenings.

Go Away Mordrake Or I'll Stab You In The Leg

Paul the Illustrated Seal got all his tattoos to keep people away. But he didnt tattoo his handsome face. Legless Suzy was panhandling and barely surviving during the depression. She stabbed a fellow hobo in the leg because she was jealous of him.

Elsa In Her Previous Line Of Employment

We finally hear some of Elsa's story and how she lost her legs. She was a dominatrix in 1932 Germany. She was very popular. A group of people called "The Watchers" payed her top dollar for many extreme acts. One day she was to star in a porn film. Instead she was drugged and her legs sawed off for a snuff film. Oh dear! She was saved by a soldier client of hers. Mordrake says he will take her. Elsa says she is ready to go. And doesnt this scene remind you of "Asylum" when Jessica's character is talking to the Angel of Death? She was all, I'm ready to go, I'm ready to go, opps... no I'm not ready to go. Anyway, Elsa is off the hook temporarily because Ed hears music playing.

Dandy and Twisty are putting on a clown show for their captives. Jimmy and Esmerelda happen by on a motorcycle but it breaks down. While they're trying to fix it, a Twisty escapee runs into the road. Twisty knocks her out cold and disappears into the woods again. Jimmy says he has to help them. Instead both he and Es end up captured too. When Jimmy regains consciousness, Dandy is about to saw Esmerelda in half.

And We Have A Winner

Just then Mordrake appears to Twisty. What's his story? Twisty was dropped on his head by his alcoholic mom (so that explains some of his disposition). He used to be a children's clown but some carny dwarfs didnt like him. They spread a rumor that he was a child molester. Twisty lost his job. He moved back home to Jupiter but his mother was already dead. He tried making children's toys out of garbage. No one wanted them. At some point he couldnt take it anymore and decided to kill himself. He shoots himself in the mouth with a shotgun but botched the job. Now he has no lower jaw (so he wears the laughing mask). And we have a winner! Mordrake decided he is most deserving and Twisty is dead.

Why Couldnt Dora Kill Dandy Instead? Now That Would Have Been TV Worth Watching!

Dandy shows up back home in his clown outfit (and Twisty's mask). He verbally spars again with Miss Patti LaBelle. She's having none of his crap. He slices her throat and kills her. Bummer. I was seriously hoping Dora would be the one to kill Dandy later in the season. That would have been great! And what, no Patti LaBelle song? I thought for sure she would sing something since Elsa and Dot/Bette keep belting them out.

They Like Us... At Least For Today

The townsfolk arrive at the camp. They want to thank Jimmy for saving Twisty's hostages. He neglects to tell them it was him (Mordrake did the deed). Elsa tells everyone to buy tickets to the show. Looks like the truce between the citizens and freaks will hold at least a while.

And in the final scene Stanley (Denis O'Hare) makes an appearance at the circus. He says his name is Richard Something and he's a talent scout from Hollywood. Elsa is immediately hooked. Hey Elsa, you were almost killed in that snuff film. Dont ya think you should give up your delusions of stardom?

We only saw a brief glimpse of Bette, Dot, Desiree and Del this week. I dont think we saw Ethel at all.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "I have a handsome face. I have the face of a pretty man. Can you image this mug on a normal body? I couldve ruled the world."- Paul the Illustrated Seal.
  • "I never cared for dwarfs. Power mad, the lot of them."- Mordrake
  • "I didnt make them do any chores. I got a pretty babysitter"- Twisty's rationale for kidnapping children.
  • "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!"- Dandy the spoiler brat/clown/serial killer wanna be.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). While this was not my most favorite episode, we did see the origin stories of Elsa and Twisty. I'm sorry to see Twisty go. He was great fun to hate. And kudos to John Carroll Lynch. He really brought Twisty to life with just eye movements and body language. Read more about him here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002253/
