Once Upon A Time Season 4 Episodes 7 Thru 9 Recaps: The Smashing Snow Queen

Can Someone Please Give This Woman A Hug?

"The Snow Queen" and "Smash The Mirror" Parts 1 and 2 focus primarily on Ingrid. We see the back story of how she ended up in the urn in the first place. She could not control her powers and accidentally killed her sister. Then her other sister Greta (who is Elsa and Anna's mother) put Ingrid in the urn.

We learn Ingrid's master plan. It's to replace her two real sisters with her niece Elsa and Emma. She will make the rest of the town turn against each other by using her mirror to enact "The Shattered Sight" curse. Ingrid doesnt like the ordinary folk. She is partial to people with magical powers. But seriously, how many curses does this make for Storeybrooke? I've lost count at this point.

I know Ingrid is supposed to be the "big bad" this season but I find her more of a sympathetic character. All she wanted was the love of her sisters. Sure her plans are misguided but could someone please give the woman a hug? Also bonus points for Elizabeth Mitchell's depiction of the character. She doesnt raise her voice and break things like other villains (I'm looking at you Wicked Witch). She quietly plods along trying to get what she wants. I think a quiet simmering baddie is much more effective than a loud one.

Havent You Learned Not To Trust Rumple By Now?

In Storeybrooke Emma exiles herself because she cant control her newfound powers. She goes to Gold for help after hurting Henry. Rumple says he'll take away her magic if that's what she wants. But magic always comes with a price dearie. Rumple neglects to tell Emma that not only will she lose her powers but she'll be trapped in the sorcerer's hat indefinitely. Why does anyone on this show believe a word Rumple says?

Good Thing I Went To The Bathroom Before This Spell Was Enacted

Meanwhile Ingrid is still trapped by the temporary spell that Rumple created. She communicates with Emma through her mirror telling her not to do what Rumple suggests. But Emma doesnt listen cause she's... well, Emma. The rest of the family (the Charmings, Henry, Regina and Elsa) are searching for Emma all over town. Regina discusses her feelings for Robin with Snow. It's great to see those two getting along again. Robin loves Regina and wants to help her get her happy ending.

Boy These Two Have Lots Of Problems

There are a number of flashbacks to Arendelle to flesh out the rest of the story with Ingrid, Anna and Elsa. After discussing some Norse curse, Anna gets a glass shards to the eye, Anna forgets she loves her sister. Anna puts Elsa in the urn. She quickly recovers from the spell and regrets what she has done (but it's too late). Ingrid turns the entire kingdom into ice and leaves with the urn (and Elsa inside). Rumple shows up and steals the urn. He tells Ingrid he'll exchange the urn for the sorcerer's hat. Ingrid is about to summon Rumple but the sorcerer's apprentice appears and tells him he has found her second sister. The only catch is she'll have to wait a while. Emma hasnt been born yet. "When the time comes, it (the door) will lead you to your sister" the apprentice says. She gives him the hat and walks through the door. She is in "our world" in 1982. It's supposed to be New York but it's actually Vancouver.

Haaa Too Funny.

Rumple's plan of zapping Emma's strength doesnt work. Elsa talks her down before she opens the door (which has the activated magical hat behind it). Elsa convinces Emma to accept herself for who she is. They hold hands and Emma's power is deactivated (insert subtext here).

Rumple goes to plan B. He will find another way to break the control of the dagger over him. The missing ingredient he needs is a heart. The heart has to be from someone who knew Rumple before he became the Dark One. Of course Hook fits the bill. Now he must do Rumple's bidding. He picks up the hat and hides it under his jacket.

This Is Almost As Good As Swan Queen (Emphasis On "Almost")

Robin asks Regina to come to the library immediately. He hands her a missing page from the fairytale book. Its of them kissing when they first met in the pub. The page appeared "like magic". Regina finally has a little hope. We all know something bad will happen to her soon (cause she cant catch a break).

Emma is reunited with her family and celebrates by putting on a magical fireworks display. Ingrid, Elsa and Emma all have their yellow ribbons around their wrists. Ingrid now wields the power of all three "sisters".  And in the final scene she enacts the curse. Uh oh.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Elsa you will accept who you are one day."- Ingrid to Elsa (while in the urn).
  • "The only way to control your powers is to embrace them. This is who you are."- Elsa to Emma.
  • "I'll make you a deal. An urn for a hat. Its as simple as that."- Rumple to Ingrid.
  • "I owe someone a quarter."- Regina to Robin about her previous discussion with Snow.
  • "Happy endings can take a long time but they do happen."- the sorcerer's apprentice to Ingrid.
  • "Your strange fixation holds no interest to me."- Rumple to Ingrid (about her plan to create two new sisters).
  • "This may be the dumbest idea you've had and you hired the Wicked Witch as your nanny."- Regina to the Charmings.

Please, Please, Please Let Regina Have A Happy Ending!

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Extra, extra bonus points for those smoldering kissing scenes between Regina and Robin. If we cant have Swan Queen, at least we got the next best thing. Regina looks particularly beautiful in those scenes (if that is even possible). Also just a reminder that there is no new episode next week.
