The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 6 Recap: The Carol And Daryl Show

Caryl: One Badass Team

"Consumed" marks the third week we've been away from the core team at the church. We first caught up with Beth at Grady Memorial Hospital, then the DC Team and now the most badass team on "The Walking Dead".

This Place Looks Familiar

When we last saw Daryl and Carol they were speeding through the darkness following a car with white crosses on it. The vehicle that took Beth had the same markings. They tail them all the way back to downtown Atlanta but have to stop because the car runs out of gas.

Carol and Daryl (I'm calling them Caryl for brevity's sake) hold up in a building that Carol is familiar with. Its an emergency shelter for abused women and children. Daryl asks about her past but Carol doesnt want to talk. I've always enjoyed these characters together even if they are just sharing a quiet moment or having a laugh (well as much as the two of them laugh).

Zombies Unite To Help A Stranded Motorist

They come upon Noah who steals their weapons. Really bad move Noah.Carol and Daryl start off down the highway. A horde of zombies approach. They hid inside an ambulance that is teetering off a bypass. Said zombies push the ambulance over and it crashes to the ground some 25 feet below. Both Daryl and Carol have their seat belts on but Carol is injured. What? The passenger doesnt get an air bag? Bonus points for zombies splattering on top of the ambulance. Zombies are so stupid man!

Stealing From These Two Is A Bad Idea

They catch up with Noah again. Daryl repays him by pushing a bookcase on top of him. Carol wants to help. Just when a walker is about to chomp Noah, Daryl saves him with an arrow. They eventually find out they all know Beth. But uh oh, here comes to po po. They make a run for it. Stupidly, Carol steps out in front of the car and is hit. The Grady crew picks her up, throws her in the car and take off. Seriously Carol? You blow up Terminus single handedly, you kill zombies on a daily basis and you dont look both ways when crossing the street? Well at least this puts Team Rick in orbit with the Grady cops. And in the final scene Daryl and Noah head back to the church. They will need people and weapons to save both Carol and Beth.

Miscellanea:
  • Walkers are easily confined in sleepy bag and/or tents. Too many damn zippers!
  • Walkers are attracted to fire. Just set a fire and scurry behind them while they're all hanging out around it.
  • When you're trying to hide in the darkness, stray walkers banging on your car window asking for change are the worst. Go away dude! I gave at the office.
  • Daryl taking care of the woman and child that were trapped in the shelter so Carol didnt have too. How sweet (in a post apocalyptic kinda way).
  • Did you notice that when Noah first stole the weapons Carol wanted to kill him (and Daryl hesitated). Then when he was trapped under the bookcase, Daryl wanted to let him die (and Carol wanted to save him).
  • Seeing the decaying Atlanta cityscape was cool.
  • Daryl and Carol talk about the need to continually evolve and change. Carol says Dayrl has become a man. Carol has transformed form an abusive wife to one of the strongest characters on the show. There is a real sense of loss though for everything that has passed-- Carol's daughter Sophia, Daryl's brother Meryl etc. But they are still alive and must continue forward.
  • I dont even want to guess on who will die this season. I seriously hope its not Carol. She's become one of the best parts of this show.
  • Do you ship Caryl romantically? I do not. I believe they have more of a brother/sister relationship but whatever works for ya.
  • The van that Caryl were in SHOULD have landed on its top (and not right side up). Just saying...
  • Favorite Quote: Daryl as art critic: "It looks like a dog sat in paint and then wiped his ass across it". Too funny.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not a great lot happened but I love Caryl so 4 1/2 Monster for you! There are only 2 more episodes of TWD this year. The show will return in February. I'm already sad.
