This Looks Like A Nice Bed & Breakfast
We're seven episodes into Gotham. How are you feeling about the show so far? It's much better than I expected. Sure the "villain of the week" is hokey at times. I'm looking at you Balloonman! But overall I find the good far outweighs the bad. The main characters are compelling (especially Penguin). I think Robin Lord Taylor is brilliant. I also like Fish Mooney. Yes I know both characters have their fair share of haters.
Here's the latest happenings in the seedy underbelly of "Gotham":
Give Me What I Want Or I'll Poke You In The Eye
In "Arkham" we get our first glimpse of Arkham Asylum. There's a hitman (Gladwell) killing people with a telescope with a blade in it. Dude, has no one ever told you not to put those things up to your eye? This killer was pretty lame to me. And there are much easier ways to off someone. Falcone and Maroni are fighting it out for control of the area. Gordon and Bullock try to find the killer. The Penguin visits the guys who robbed Maroni's restaurant. As payment for a job well done, he poisons them with canoli.
Girl Fight!
Meanwhile Fish has two women fight it out for a nightclub singing job. Boy, show business is rough.
This Week's "Gotham" Is Brought To You By The American Dairy Counsel
In "Viper" a new highly potent drug is on the streets. The druggies are super strong and have a craving for milk. The drug eventually kills them. The team tries to keep the drug from being distributed at a charity event. We learn that Wayne Enterprises is dirty to the core. That ought to keep Little Bruce Wayne busy for a while. Fish sends Liza (she won the nightclub job by beating the other prospect to death) to the park to bat her eyelashes at Falcone. And he falls for it hook, line and sinker.
Do You Like My Costume? I Made It Myself.
"Spirit Of The Goat" was my favorite of these four episodes. We see some of Bullock's back story. Years ago he and his partner Dix (played by Dan Hedaya) were pursuing a killer who was offing the first born children of Gotham's elite. They eventually find the old goat and kill him (but he says he'll be back). In the process of trying to apprehend the suspect, Dix falls and is permanently paralyzed. We learn that Bullock has been sending money to take care of Dix all these years. Ah, how sweet! I really wanted to see more of Goatie though. That costume was pretty scary. But alas it was not meant to be.
Where Can I Sign Up For A Therapist Like This?
The killer turns out to be a therapist who is hypnotizing her clients to kill children. And if you didnt recognize Dr Marks, it's Sandra Beeman from "The Americans" (played by the absolutely stunning Susan Misner). I hope Sandra comes back this season. She needs to seriously kick that cheating Stan to the curb.
You Two: Stop Touching Each Other!
And we get a scene of Oswald bathing. His mom (Gertrud Kapelput) helps him wash.
Freaky!!!! But Ms Carol Kane is the best. And we now know where Penguin gets his eccentric behavior from. Gordon is arrested by Montoya and Allen for Cobblepot's murder but SURPRISE he's still alive. Bullock is none too happy about this development and wants to punch Gordo in the face.
Dude Looks Like One Of Those Vampires From "The Strain"
In "Penguin's Umbrella" Gordo tries to send Barbara away so she'll be safe. Yes go away Barbara and dont come back (but we know she will). James almost dies due to gunshot wounds courtesy of Victor Zsasz and his girl assassins. They were sent by Carmine Falcone. Gordon tells Little Bruce that Allen and Montoya will take over his case. Fish's secret weapon (Liza) is still moving in for the kill on Falcone.
WTF? You Were Playing Me?
In the final scenes we learn that Falcone and Penguin were working together all along. Oswald purposefully infiltrated Maloni's organization for Falcone. They eventually meet in the rain under Penguin's umbrella to plot their next moves. And we learn that Oswald is the one that's kept Gordon alive. Me thinks he has a man crush (plus the dude has no friends). How sad.
I Think I Would Like Barbara Better As A Drug Addicted Bisexual
Random Observations:
- I'm still not sure how I feel about Barbara. She and Gordon dont seem to have any chemistry. What say you?
- That viperhead (not to be confused with methhead) that was crushed by the ATM reminded me of the scene from "Breaking Bad" where that woman crushed her husband's head with one. Ouch!
- I must remember to use "copygoat" in at least one sentence each day.
- We learn the Penguin's full name is Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot. That's a mouthful.
- When are Montoya and Barbara going to have a steamy scene? That's what I'm holding out for.
- Zsasz stop it with the carving in your skin every time you kill someone. You're already too pasty. You cant afford to lose any more blood. PS the lady cop was #28.
- Who knew Falcone was so fond of chickens?
- Everyone on this show wants everyone else dead-- especially Mooney, Falcone, Maloni and Oswald.
- Using nuns as road blocks is always a good time.
Favorite Quotes:
- "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."- Gladwell.
- "Hi Mom, I'm alive"- Oswald to his mom.
- "Humor is so important dont ya think?"- Edward Nygma.
- "Alive is a very broad category. A man with no hands can still be alive."- Victor Zsasz
- Fish slaps Penguin and calls him a "scaly faced bitch". Ouch, that hurt!
- "There's no loyalty among thieves."- Oswald.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I was going to give these episodes a "3" but the last two episodes brought up the score. Yes "Gotham" has some challenges but I'm still enjoying it. Will I stick around for the 22 episodes of the first season though? I"m not sure but time will tell.
