"Tome-wan" was an action packed episode leading into next week's season finale. Since the show has been renewed for a third season we know Hannibal and Will will not be killed. Everyone else is fair game though. Place your bets now. I'm laying odds on Alana biting the big one and maybe Dr Du Maurier. I dont think Jack will be killed since it was hinted at during the first episode.
Will continues to fantasize about killing Lecter by feeding him to the pigs. However when he has the opportunity to do just that, he instead saves Hannibal. OK then. Conflicted much? In his defense, we later learn that Mason was planning to kill Will right after he killed Hannibal.
Remember last week, Will told Mason that Hannibal wanted him dead (so this week Mason goes on the offensive). His men attack Hannibal and bring him to the pig farm. Instead of slashing Hannibal's throat, Will cuts him loose and then promptly passed out. Dude, you should know by now that payback is a bitch when it comes to Hannibal. Plus Mason is exceedingly rude and Lecter does not tolerate rude people.
Jack tells Will that he found Dr Du Maurier. Yeah, I love Jillian Anderson! She confesses to Will that she killed the patient who attacked her. She believed it was self defense at the time but it seems that both she and the patient were manipulated by Hannibal. Will "The report said he swallowed his own tongue.” Du Maurier: “It wasn’t attached the the time.” Oh dear. And if Will thinks he's the one in control with Hannibal, he's dead wrong. She also says Hannibal will only be caught due to his arrogance and "whimsy" at what he has accomplished.
After being knocked out at the farm, Will awakes and finds the lower half of one of Mason's men missing. The pigs had a quick snack. Will heads home and finds Mason feeding "something" to his dogs. That something is his face. Hannibal had previously given Mason a butt load of hallucinogens.
Let us briefly pause for a public service announcement: Dont do drugs kids! Or you face could end up dog food. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.
They discuss who should kill Mason and put him out of his misery. No you should, I insist. Hannibal finally snaps Mason's neck. I thought Mason was dead but in the next scene we see Jack visiting him. He is paralyzed (and wearing a mask cause who wants to see that). Mason tells Crawford that he was injured by the pigs. Margo arrives and says "I will take care of you dear brother just like you took care of me". Again payback is a bitch.
This episode (and the end of the last) gives us confirmation that Jack has been on Will's side all along. He warns Will that he is very close to crossing the line. Will killed Randall in self defense but then mutilated his body (as a ploy to get closer to Hannibal).
If that is the end of the Verger storyline, I'll be disappointed. That wrapped up much more quickly than I thought. I hope Margo is not gone for good.
And what's up with Hannibal sketching all those men and talking about the Greeks? Just get a room already you two. And when Will said to Hannibal "you dont want me to have anyone else in my life by you" I thought were were couples therapy for a minute.
Favorite Quotes and Miscellanea:
- "Don't fool yourself into thinking he's not in control of what's happening"- Dr Du Maurier
- "I am enchanted and terrified"- Mason
- "I have the taste and consistency similar to that of a chicken gizzard. I am full of myself."- Mason after he eating his own nose. Yes you are sir. Yes you are.
- Tome-wan is a miso or vegetable soup served with rice for anyone who's interested.
- Recipe of the Week: fish in aspic (which is a gelatinous substance). This prompts Hannibal to expound on when it's impossible to tell who is the hunter and who is the prey.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). An excellent episode. I cant wait till see what happens during the season finale. So who do you think will make an appearance? Freddie? Dr Chilton perhaps. I would say Beverly but, alas, she is really gone and sliced thinner than a deli turkey.
