Helix Episode 10 Recap: Ive Done Terrible Things In The Name Of Science

Day 10 at Arctic Biosystems. This week's episode entitled "Fushigi" has Julia trying to get Daddy Hatake to come clean about what's really happening. Alan does an MRI on Sarah. There's nothing else they can do to improve her condition (she has late stage cancer).  Hatake finds video that Dr. Adrian took the Narvick virus and disappeared into the frozen tundra. Alan and Julia snow plow their way to Echelon station (an old Russian satellite station) to try to find Adrian and possibly call for help. I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed but didnt this episode have a "Shining" vibe to you?

When Julia and Alan arrive at the station, they see that Adrian has indeed been communicating with Ilaria. There is a scuffle and he's eventually tied up. One of Sutton's men is outside. He shoots Adrian (which is good cause he's was a jerk) and the radio (not good since that's their only hope). If they throw out the virus, no one else will get hurt. No dice so he keeps shooting. Alan and Julie's escape through a secret hatch in the floor. They find a strange looking creature with silver eyes chained up to a wall. His name is Gunnar Mickaelson and he's been a preacher, a scientist, a viking, etc. So obviously, he's a job hopper and currently unemployed. He begs them to free him. He sings Christmas carols and babbles on about lots of stuff... you can live 40 days without food, blah, blah.

Anana and Daniel are trying to get all the villagers to relocate so they wont be attacked by Ilaria. Looks like there's one more members of Sutton's death squad out there so Daniel takes after him. Anana and Sergio finally have a long awaited love connection. OK Anana, I know you've got feels but he still cant be trusted.

Meanwhile back at the base, Peter, King of the Vectors, shows up and starts shuffling through some papers. Hatake catches him and says it will all be over soon. Peter, who has a lot of difficulty speaking, says "Sooner than you think". Not sure what that means. The next time we see Peter he is in an air duct again taping pictures of Julia on the walls. Why is everyone so in love with Julia? I don't understand it.

Hatake gives Sarah a hint about what to look for in Julia's DNA for something that could help her condition. She finally finds it and leaves a video saying she's going to try it on herself. Sarah adds "I'm not afraid. I'm ready". If what she found is correct it could be the cure to cancer and the secret of immortality.

Gunnar tells Alan and Julia that Hatake locked him up 29 years ago. He is one of the immortals. There can only be 500. He tricks Julia into helping him commit suicide. Apparently immortality isnt all it's cracked up to be. Can immortals only be killed by other immortals? I'm not sure. One of Sutton's men shows up and is about to shoot Julia. Just then Daniel arrives and saves them. They burn Echelon station down and Julia throws the virus into the fire.

Upon returning to the station Hatake tells them Sarah is close to death. He says there's nothing they can do to save her but there is something Julia can do. And what would that be? Hatake also confirms some of what Gunnar said. The 500 immortals run the Ilaria Corporation. But Gunnar betrayed Julia's mother to Sutton (which was a death sentence). So Hatake felt obliged to make Gunnar suffer as well.

And in the final scene we see that Julie did NOT destroy the virus. She has vials of Narvick A and B. What a sneaky snake.

Points To Ponder:

  • If there can only be 500 immortals does that mean one has to die for a new person to become immortal. If Gunnar was really killed (I'm still not sure) does that make room for Sarah? And on a related note, do the immortals have to be killed by having their heads chops off? Cause Sutton's head is in cold storage and Dr Hvit's head is currently MIA.
  • What is Julia up to with saving that virus? If she a "bad guy" now?
  • Was any of what Gunnar was rambling about useful info?
  • And only on television would you take time to bicker with your ex-spouse about your "relationship issues" during a gun battle.
  • Is there going to be a vector uprising soon? Spartacus!
Favorite Quotes:

  • "I've done things, terrible things in the name of science,"- Hatake
  • "Please tell me there's no cabin down there"- Julia. Haaa good one Julia.
  • "But to live forever is to die 10,000 times"- Gunnar

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). This show didn't have as much action as others but at least we got SOME answers. There are only 3 episodes left. Does anyone know if there will be a season 2? I REALLY hope so.
