"The Red Road" is a six part mini series airing on the Sundance channel. It tells the story of the Ramapough Lenape Indian community in the fictitious Walpole NJ. Episode 1 is entitled "Arise My Love , Shake Off His Dream" and episode 2 is entitled "The Wolf And The Dog".
Phillip Kopus (played by Jason Momoa of "Game of Thrones" fame) is an ex-con returning home. His mother (Marie) doesn't seem happy to see him. She didn't even tell her other son Junior about him. A young white kid is missing and Phillip knows what happened. Hint: HE'S IN THE LAKE. Phillip goes into the city to see his father Jack (played by the always creepy Tom Sizemore). Jack is a sleazeball drug dealer. He gives Phillip cash and tells him to kill someone. Was it Mike? If so Mike's still alive. And how does he know Mike in the first place?
Police Officer Harold Jensen is trying to protect his alcoholic and perhaps mentally ill wife (Jean) who hit a Lenape boy while out looking for her daughter. Rachel is dating Phillip's brother Junior. Jean apparently did the same thing as a teenager. She saw her twin brother drown while they were all swimming and now has a grudge against the Lenape. Jean (whose father is a wealthy politician) and Harold have another daughter named Kate who is more level headed.
It turns out that Phillip, Harold and Jean all went to high school together and Jean and Phillip dated. Is he the boy who watched her brother drown and did nothing to help? We've already witnessed him submerged in the water like a crocodile while Mike almost kills Junior. He didn't lift a finger to break up the fight.
We also see the disparity with how the Lenape live and how their white neighbors do. Although at this points the neighbors are winning out in the problems category.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters(out of 5). An interesting premise but I'm not sure I'm completely hooked yet. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
