Resurrection Episodes 1-3 Recaps: The Returned Gets An American Spin (Season Premiere)

Everywhere I turn these days there is another show about the undead. A friend recommended "Resurrection". It airs on Sundays at 9 AM ET (which is a pretty popular time slot, there are four other shows on at that time that I'm interested in). After three episodes of "Resurrection" though (episode 1 is "The Returned", episode 2 is "UnEarthed" and episode 3 is "Two Rivers"), I must say I'm enjoying it.

The series opens with a boy named Jacob awakening in a Chinese rice field. He doesnt remember how he got there. Agent Martin Bellamy is sent to take Jacob home to Arcadia, Missouri. We later find out Jacob drowned in 1982 (at the age of 8). His parents (who are some 30 years older) dont know what to do with him. Lucille willingly accepts him but Henry is more standoffish. He's not sure what he should believe.  Later they open Jacob's coffin and he's in there... So who/ what is this Jacob?

Next to arrive is undead Caleb. His children are Ray and Elaine. Ray thinks his father is an alien. We later learn that Caleb killed Dale. Better keep an eye on him. He's a bad, bad man.  Then at the end of episode 3, Rachel arrives. She is the ex-wife of Pastor Tom.

What's up with the dead people? Why did Caleb dig a bunch of graves in the woods? Let's hope we find out in later episodes.

Is this show EXACTLY like the French "The Returned"? No, but there are a lot of similarities. Incidentally "The Returned" was my favorite show of last year The Returned Season 1 Recaps How the two shows are similar:

  • Both take place in an isolated small town. All the undead's lives are interconnected. Incidentally on "The Returned" the dead are called "revenants" which is Latin for zombie.
  • There's a town sheriff who may be up to no good.
  • Each episode introduces another undead person-- first Jacob, then Caleb, then Rachel.
  • At least one undead person may be a homicidal killer.
  • Caleb eats all the time and seldom sleeps.
  • Ray references a dam bursting.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). My biggest gripe so far is that Jacob has been dead for 30 years but automatically knows how to use an iphone? Come on writers! Despite all the similarities with "The Returned" I'm still enjoying the show and will keep watching. Let's hope "Resurrection" doesn't fizzle out.
