Hannibal Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: The People Vs Will Graham

The Defense Would Like To Call StagMan As Our First Witness

Episode 3 of "Hannibal" is entitled "Hassun" which apparently in Japanese cuisine is the second course of a meal. It sets the theme for the main course and is governed by a number of constraints (such as the size of the dishes, the ingredients, etc). How apropos for the beginning of Will Graham's trial.

Just to catch you up to speed, Will is being charged with the murders of 5 women (including Abigail Hobbs). He is of course innocent and has been set up by Hannibal. Someone (is it Hannibal?) kills the judge and balliff to prove Will's innocence. If it is Hannibal I dont understand his motivation in trying to free Will (since then they will be looking elsewhere for the murderer). But whatever, it's still fun to watch.

I've said it before but I've never understood the stag imagery in "Hannibal" There is the stag that Will sees intermittently. There is the StagMan that Hannibal has morphed into in Will's eyes. There are stag horns lying around everywhere for people to be impaled on.

We see the return of Freddie Lounds who I had completely forgotten about. I guess Hannibal hasnt gotten around to killing her yet. What's up with the big giant hat? I thought ya couldn't wear hats in court.

Will's relationship to everyone else on the show:

I think Hannibal is in love with Will (or as much as a psychopath can be). He keeps saying they are friends to which Will replies, uh no we're definitely not. Also have we ever seen Hannibal have any interest in sex? Not that I can remember. It seems killing has replaced sex in his reptilian brain.
Alana says she only has a professional interest in Will and wants to "save him". The longing looks and hand holding at the end of the episode say otherwise.
Jack is racked with guilt over what he has done to the poor guy.
Dr Sleze Ball Chilton sees Will as his meal ticket.
Beverly is trying to uncover the truth and help Will. I fear she will come to a bad end because of it.
Kade Purnell (ie Cynthia Nixon) just wants the Will problem to go away for the FBI.
