Helix Episode 13 Recap: Yet Another Reason Not To Trust The French (Season Finale)

The latest episode of "Helix" is entitled "Dans L'ombre" (which is French for "dont trust anybody"). OK I made that up. I dont know what it means. The opening sequence threw me off a bit when it said "Day 235" instead of "Day 13". We see Alan beating up one of the immortals. This is "Helix's" way of extending the show into the next season (since it was just renewed this week). Yeah! Anyway, back to "Day 13 at Arctic Biosystems".

Daniel is dead (blew himself to bits to save Julia). Julia is missing a finger thanks to Scythe. Peter is human again. Jayne (who is not immortal) is still locked in a box. She's been held captive by Ilaria for 30 years. We find out that Hatake created the Narvick virus in order to keep her alive. Note: I dont know if the woman's name is "Jayne" or "Jane" or "Jaye". I have seen it listed differently in a number of places.

Anana and Tulok look for Sergio (who is missing in a snow storm). He finally ends up outside the base. Blake (TeamScythe) sees him on the parameter camera and brings him inside. She wants his help in finishing their mission. Meanwhile Hatake, Julia and Alan arrive at the security room armed. Instead of helping Blake, Sergio shoots her. He says "I dont work for them (Ilaria)". He just wants the list of missing Inuit children. Is that what he's been after all along? His character's motivations make no sense.

Sarah tells the remaining survivors in the bunker not to panic. That usually means "You really SHOULD panic now". Spenc shows Peter and Alan news footage on his ipad (good thing they have wifi in the arctic). A virus they're calling "Black Rain" has killed hundreds in Puerto Rico. How did they get Narvick off the base so quickly? I think its all a trick.

While the other team is in the security room, Peter is supposed to be watching Spencer. Instead of guarding him, Peter releases Spencer. They have apparently been working together all along. Boooo TraitorPeter!!! That's snap #1.

The plan is to evacuate everyone left on the base in the snow mobiles that Anana and Tulok brought. But you know it cant be that easy. Peter hands Julie the virus and the cure. Sarah is pregnant. I assume with Alan's baby.  That's snap #2.

They raise the doors to leave and there is Spencer with the denotator. He blows up the base (so bye bye Arctic Biosystems). Somehow amidst the chaos he grabs Julia and holds a knife to her neck. Jayne tries to stop him saying it's not his fault. His parents were just evil. We know him mommy is Constance but we dont know who his father is. After telling Jayne to stop calling him "Spencer", he stabs her. Well she didnt last long did she? We'll have to wait till next season to see who else survived the blast.

Just then a helicopter arrives. Spencer and Julia board. Alan chases behind. He distracts Spencer by throwing Constance's head into the helicopter. Yes you read that right. He chunked Constance's severed head into the heli causing Spencer to erupt into a crying fit. My reaction was slightly different-- I just laughed. That wasnt scary. It was hilarious. Anyway Alan boards the helicopter but gets kicked off while holding on the canisters. I assume it's the cure (and not the virus).

Flash forward to Day 235 again. We now know what Alan was doing at the beginning of the episode. He was getting the location of Ilaria from the immortal. It shouldnt be that hard dude. There's a BIG SIGN on the side of the building that says "ILARIA". I could have found that myself.

Alan tells TraitorPeter if he's not at the checkpoint to leave without him. PS Alan, you really need to hide from Peter too. We then see a conference room of business people. Someone enters the room to take the head chair. They all look up and have freaky eyes so they're all immortals. We see the hand of the person that just arrived. Its missing a finger. And snap #3, it is Julia. She says in French (since they're in Paris) "Shall we begin?". And I REALLY, REALLY didnt see that coming. Has Julia been behind this business all along What a great twist.

Other Random Stuff:

  • I'm not sure how Helix baby making works. So an immortal and a human can have a baby (Hatake + Jayne = Julia). If someone is pregnant and then becomes immortal, what happens to the baby (Human Sarah During Conception + Human Alan = WHAT?)
  • And are the immortals alien or what? I thought they were human who had been exposed to the virus (or something else). Scythe was going on about "you humans" and the witch trials, inquisitions, etc.
  • I still hold out hope that Constance's head can be reattached to another body at some point. I dont care if its unrealistic or not. I would volunteer mine but she wont be happy with it (AT ALL). Also where is Dr Hvit's head? It was introduced and then not mentioned again.
  • No monkeys still means no monkeys.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Ilaria is everywhere while you hide in the shadows."- Immortal Alan was beating up at the beginning of the episode.
  • "Torture is never justified"- Alan regarding doing something bad to Spender. Come on dude! Get in touch with reality. He just killed an elevator full of people.
  • "To the future"- Spencer to Traitor Peter.
  • "I loved your father very much. I wanted to keep our family together."- Jane to Julia on why she stayed with Hatake.
  • "Every living thing has a weakness"- Alan
  • "What are you doing"- Julia. "Trusting you with the fate of the world"- Alan. Alan just a hint, I dont think she should be trusted.

Grade: 4 1/2  Monsters (out of 5). The beginning was a little show but they nailed it at the end. I anxiously await "Helix's return" next winter!

  1. Julia's mother's name is spelled Jaye according to the SyFy Helix website. It's in the caption with this photo:
