"Criminal Minds" began it's ninth season last week. Thanks to syndication, I have watched a large number of its 180+ episodes. While I don't typically recap the show, I might add additional reviews later if the case is good.
In the opening scene of this two parter (named "The Inspiration" and "The Inspired" for some reason), J.J. and Morgan are involved in a car chase in Arizona. We see a truck speeding towards them. It looks like they're going to be side swiped. Then the show flashes back to a few days earlier.
Someone is raping and killing women but first is forcing them ti eat human remains due to a disorder called "projected cannibalism". Is that a real disorder? I've never heard of it (not that I really want to). The unsub shoots his victims in the heart and then leaves them in a praying position (because he's obsessed with the praying mantis). OK then, that's one of the stranger cases I've seen.
Turns out this guy's name is Wallace and the remains he's feeding the victims are from the head of Heather (his missing ex girlfriend). And at the end of episode 1 we find out he has a twin brother named Jessie. Their mother Carla Hines gave Jessie up for adoption so they didn't previously know about each other.
Carla is drug down to the police station. Turns out the boy's father is another whack job named Bill Robins (so genetically those boys didn't have a chance at a normal life).
We think Jessie is the "good twin" but then he kidnaps his brother. Jessie wants to know what it's like to be a killer. He breaks into a woman's house and then has Wallace join him in killing her. There is eventually a showdown at a church. One twin kills the other. Which one is left standing (hint Wallace has a finger twitch)? And why do we care? Carla apparently had a scheme in place for Jessie to kill Wallace (because even though he was the twin she kept, he was the "bad twin"). OK that seems like a convoluted mess to me.
In other unrelated news, Hotch was being considered for BAU Section Chief (since Erin Strauss was killed last season). At the end of the episode, his name is withdrawn so he's back with his team.
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5).To be honest I found these two episodes boring for a season premiere. I do enjoy seeing Camryn Manheim in everything she does though. I hope "Criminal Minds" picks it up with some interesting cases.
