And the first season of "The Bridge" comes to an end. It has been a long strange ride. I have said previously that "The Bridge" requires active mental participation. It's not something you can lazily watch. It's also doesn't have a "case of the week" or a "criminal of the week" that can be neatly dispatched with in 48 minutes.
That being said, the pacing of the show has always struck me as being a bit different. Usually a finale is centered around the big reveals that the writers have been leading up to all season. Not so with "The Bridge". The first 10 episodes appear to be based on the original Danish/Swedish series "Bron". The last two episodes ("All About Eva" and "The Crazy Place") setup season 2 (which may focus more on the missing Juarez girls). There were no massive shootouts, big reveals or character deaths in the finale (which may have upset a number of viewers).
Other observations:
- Eva is found thanks to work by Marco, Sonya and Celia but she's badly injured . Crooked cops are to blame. At least that one didn't kill her like he was instructed (although as a result he was later shot). Now Linder (who remains one of the strangest characters on television) has his bride back.
- Sonya and Marco seem to have reconciled since she just shows up at his house and makes him eggs. I do find their dynamic very interesting. Not sure if I want the show to make them a romantic couple next season.
- Charlotte is well on her way to become a drug lord. She better be careful with Fausto. She is seriously out of her league with him. And she runs into a mysterious man at the butcher shop.
- Daniel lives (that guy has 9 lives). His first assignment back on the job is to report on Millie Quintana's 100th birthday celebration. When he and Adriana arrive, they find Millie dead (and with millions of US dollars and Euros). Who knows what that's about.
- Marco goes to Fausto to discuss David Tate. But he doesn't want Fausto to kill Tate, he wants help so Marco can kill David himself. I really hope that's the end of that guy. I think we've seen enough of him.
- Adriana sister is missing. Her mother waiting for her to get off the bus (that brings women from the factory) but she never arrives. I hope we see Adriana play a more prominent role next season.
- Favorite quote: "Show me some respect. You work for me now. Does Cesar slap my ass?"- Charlotte to Ray (when he did). No, the question should be does Cesar want to. Poor Cesar. He has to put up with all manner of strangeness.
Grade: 3 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). Season 2 is scheduled for the summer of 2014. Not sure I will recap it regularly next season but ya never know.
