Dracula Episode 1 Recap: Needs A Bit More Bite (Series Premiere)

What did you think of NBC's "Dracula"? The episode entitled "The Blood Is The Life" aired on Friday at 10 ET. It is the first of a 10 part miniseries. The main character is played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers of "The Tudors" fame.

Alexander Grayson is an American industrialist arriving in London in the 1890s.  He's throwing a big party for city's the upper crust. What no one else knows is that Grayson is really Vlad Tepes. He was turned into a vampire in the 1600s by the Order of the Dragon. They also killed his wife. So obviously he's out for revenge. Oh and Van Helsing is working with Dracula because the Dragons killed his family too.

At the big party Alexander sees Mina Murray (who reminds him of his late wife). She is attracted to him too. He unveils something called "geomagnetic technology" which basically involves makes a light bulb being held by each party goer glow. The oil industry tycoons (some are Dragons) see this as a threat so they're out to get him.

Highlights:
  • The opening scene where a decayed Dracula was rejuvenated in his coffin by the blood of two unfortunate victims (well they were grave robbers) was a good one.
  • JRM is great in everything he does and is easy on the eyes.
  • Lady Jane (Victoria Smurfit) is my favorite character so far. She kicks ass.
  • So apparently Jack the Ripper was a vampire too? Who knew?
Lowlights:
  • The show seemed slow at times.
  • I see zero chemistry between Grayson and Murray.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not the speculator start I had hoped for but still has promise. We shall see how the next few episodes go.
