Hostages Episode 2 Recap: Invisible Leash

Official Episode Synopsis: The family faces fallout from Ellen's decision to delay the president's surgery. Meanwhile, Duncan juggles being both negotiator and captor, as the Secret Service and his own department start asking questions.

"Actions have consequences, Ellen"- Duncan

Last week Dr. Sanders narrowly averted disaster by sneaking the President a blood thinner so she wouldn't be forced to operate (and to kill him). This week we learn a little more about the various kidnappers (Kramer is a drug addict and Sandrine didn't know she was on a mission to kill the POTUS). And Ellen hopefully learns what happens when she doesn't comply with the kidnappers demands... poor Nurse Angela. But how do we know that she's really dead?

Other goings on:
  • Ellen is required to take a lie detector test. Duncan coaches her on how to pass it.
  • The baddies have people everywhere so Ellen has to be especially careful who she talks to.
  • When she returns home, Ellen is lead to the basement where her family is bound and blindfolded. She must pick which person will be killed. Pick Brian. He's creating anyway. That was very suspenseful scene. The good news is no one was actually shot.
  • Ellen is forced to implant GPS devices into her loved ones (and without using anesthesia). Couldn't they at least have a swig of whisky or something?
  • Brian is taken to his mistress' house for their usual rendezvous so she doesn't get suspicious. Do you think she's in on the plot? I'm suspicious of everyone now.
  • And it still seems Duncan was forced into this but we don't know the specifics. We also don't know what's up with his wife. Is she in a coma? Have the head conspirators promised to revive her if he keeps his end of the bargain?
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A solid episode with excellent acting. I'm still not sure this series has long term staying power though. Time will tell. I may also move to recapping this show every other week. You can bet each recap will read: President still alive, Ellen's family still being held hostage, Ellen still trying to figure out what to do.
